From the mouths of babes--

A few years ago, when I was still active in my work in schools, several of my talented primary teachers had their students write letters to Santa. From time to time, these teachers would share a few, especially when the messages made you bend over with laughter or rip your heart out. Sometimes it takes children to remind us about the meaning and fun in Christmas…and perhaps put a mirror up to ourselves. I wish I’d kept some of those dandies but I wasn’t that smart or prescient. Or probably just too busy at the time.
Recently I came across some other published letters to Santas and they made me laugh and think about Christmas and I thought I’d share a few in this blog. Enjoy.

“Dear Santa, I have been trying to be a responsible person. I hope I would get what I always wanted. The thing I want most is a dog. dog. dog. Santa, I would even trade my one and only Mom for a dog. I knew that a dog would be a big responsibility but I have been bugging my Dad since I was three and I’m tired of it! Love, Megan.”
“Dear Santa if you want to grab a beer feel free to get the lot or Just one. PS the Fridge is near the door.”
“Please text my dad. He has my whole list. Xoxoxo.”
“For Christmas I would like a $100, $50 gift card to somewhere I like, and a note signed by my parents saying that I am allowed to paint my nails. Sincerely, Kailyn. p.s. The $50 gift card can’t be to any fool places and it has to already have money on it.”
“Dear Santa Claus, I am so sorry of what I did in the past and thank you for the Christmas letter. I love it. But what I want for Christmas this year is 5.3 billion dollars.”
“Santa, If you cannot Buy what I want take it easy on yourself Just give me tens and one’s of mony.”

“Dear Santa and helpers, I have been very good this year. I am expecting a little sister. I don’t want her. Mommy says her will be fun. I heard girls stink. I will trade you my sister when she comes from the stork for a elf. I want a race car and a garage set for Christmas. There will be sugar cookies and burritos waiting for you. Thank you, Santa. Craig.”
“Santa, You better bring me a pony this year. Or there will be consequences.”
And then there are these messages…
“Dear Santa, I want to thank you for giving me my Grandpa back to me last Christmas, he came home Christmas Eve, but sadly he died Jan. 1. But you gave me my special gift, my Grandpa for Christmas. Thank you. I live with Grandma and we are OK. All I want is Frozen shoes and a outfit. Thank you. Love you, Sara.”
“Dear Santa, Don’t worry about me this year. I already have what I want. And she’s standing right next to me. Your friend, Taylor.”
“Dear Santa, Some may not believe in you but I do. One thing I really want for Christmas is my big brother to get a kidney transplant. PLEASE.”
Thanks to these anonymous children whose words brought us smiles or tugged at our hearts. Perhaps they can help remind us of the lessons we share with them…about Santa and life.
I’m truly grateful to have so many friends, colleagues and fans in my second literary act. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season this year and remember what would make a perfect present this year. A copy of one my award-winning novels, that’s what!
